Liebraumilch is not a grape variety, but rather a style of semi-sweet white wine that is produced in Germany. The name Liebraumilch means “Beloved lady’s milk”, in reference to the Virgin Mary. The grapes used must be at least 70% Riesling, Silvaner or Müller-Thurgau. Grapes for Liebraumilch wines are usually grown in the German wine regions of Rheinhessen, Palatinate, Rheingau and Nahe.
Ranging from a deep golden yellow to copper and even a light shade of pink, Liebfraumilch is most often a style semi-sweet white wine. Light in body, the typical Leibraumilch wine has soft fruity notes on the palate and soft fruity aromas on the nose. Liebfraumilch is best as an easy-drinking, no-fuss everyday wine.
As an aperitif, serve Leibraumilch with cold snacks, a charcuterie board, pâté or with an assortment of cheeses. These off-dry wines are also great with a variety of pork and seafood dishes. Its splash of sweetness can temper spicy foods; try it with fiery Chinese or Thai take-out dishes (with the chilis beside their names of the menu).
