Pinotage

The Grape

Pinotage is South Africa’s signature red grape variety. It was created in 1925 when South African viticulturalists crossed the native French grapes Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. South Africa still claims the majority of the world’s plantings, making up just 6% of that country’s total vineyard area.  Pinotage vines are vigorous like their parent Cinsaut and easy to grow. They ripen early with high sugar levels and naturally high tannins.

The Wines

Pinotage typically produces deep red varietal wines with smoky, bramble and earthy flavours, serious tannins and sometimes notes of bananas and tropical fruit with undertones of chocolate and spice. The grape is very dependent on the skill and style of winemaking, with well-made examples having the potential to produce excellent fruity wines that can be accessible early or aged in the bottle.

The Occasions

When pairing Pinotage, take clues from its parents: Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. Pinotage will go with the same sort of dishes that you would pair with a Pinot Noir like pulled pork. Its Cinsault heritage gives it a compatibility with Mediterranean ingredients like peppers and egg plants. Try pairing it with a Moussaka.
